7 Best Mobile Workstation Laptops for Business or Engineering Students in 2019

Workstation laptops are not only stronger than regular business laptops, but they are also very versatile. They may look chunky or heavy, but even so, these beasts offer some things you might expect from a desktop and not a laptop. So you’re probably wondering, “Why would I want a workstation instead of a regular cheap business laptop?” Well, I think you just answered your own question; business laptops are cheap and made very thin, meaning less parts or smaller parts, which in turn means less power. Workstation laptops, however, are made for more power and versatility. While they do cost more, they’re very strong.

Not sure what mobile workstation laptops to pick up? Don’t know what the best laptop for engineers or business is? That’s why we compiled this list — to show you some of the best options available to you today.

Apple MacBook Pro 15

Depending on the type of engineering that you plan on doing, the MacBook Pro 15 can be an excellent choice. It’s most optimal for Software Engineers, as the macOS platform is based off of Linux. That provides a whole lot more control over what you’re doing, and even gives you access to more tools on the market.

The MacBook Pro 15 has one of the best display son the market as well. At a little over 15-inches in size, this one comes with a pretty large screen. You can view your favorite movies and video with extraordinary detail, but more importantly, you have a better color gamut for working on websites and software. That’s largely because Apple is using their proprietary Retina technology here,  which provides that excellent quality.

And as is very necessary for engineering students, the MacBook Pro 15 comes with some great hardware — you get one of the latest and more powerful Intel processors inside, as well as a dedicated graphics card and a whopping 16GB of RAM. You do have options to upgrade it to 32GB.

Surface Book 2

But, if you need something that’s on Windows, and still need excellent hardware and a top of the line display, the Surface Book 2 might be more up your alley. You can get this one in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes, depending on the screen real estate you need.

This particular model of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 comes with an 8th generation Intel Quad-Core i7 processor, 512 GB of storage via an SSD, 16 GB RAM, and up to 17 hours of video playback on a single charge. This one also has a dedicated video card — it’s actually a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 discrete GPU, and has 2GB of GDDR5 RAM itself.

This one is pretty easy to travel with as well. If you want to ditch the keyboard, you can take the Surface Book 2 into tablet mode by removing the keyboard, and use it as a Windows-based tablet!

Razer Blade

This laptop is a gaming laptop, but doesn’t have to be used as such. Putting the gaming label on it just shows it’s a very powerful laptop which means better performance. Overall this laptop is great for any kind of use whether it be for gaming, working, or studying.

As for the specs, it has a 2.8 GHz intel core i7 CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD drive, so as you can see this laptop should be able to take anything that’s thrown at it (figuratively speaking, of course). The RAM and the CPU are currently top of line necessities, so if you’re a big multitasker, then having that 16GB of RAM and 2.8GHz CPU should help a lot.

HP ZBook Studio G3

This laptop is known as the brains and the beauty, seeing as it looks beautiful with its optional 4k display and its powerful inner workings. Essentially this laptop has been stated as a mobile workstation squeezed to fit the ultrabook form. It may be ultrabook size, but it works like workstation laptop.

Although the battery life isn’t fantastic, this laptop works like a beast with the following components: a 3.7 GHz intel Xeon CPU, Nvidia Quadro GPU, 32GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD drive. All that being said, this laptop looks great and works even better. With the intel Xeon and the 32GB of RAM, nothing will prohibit you from utilizing this laptop to it’s full capabilities.

Toshiba Tecra Z40T C 10M

This laptop has quite a bit of power behind it, and has great mobility, which means that while it’s powerful, Toshiba has done so without adding too much weight. This laptop also has lots of connectivity options so it’s great for business use. While this is a little more on the pricey side, it’s an awesome pick.

As for the specs or components under the hood we have, a 2.8GHz intel core i7 processor, Intel HD Graphics card, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD drive.

Lenovo ThinkPad P70

This laptop also comes equipped with a beautiful 4k display which is typically uncommon with business/workstation laptops. This workstation laptop is one of the top ones Lenovo has created, which means better parts and more crisp images whether it be for movies, videos, or video games.

As for the specs of this fine delightful workstation laptop, it has a 2.8GHz intel xeon CPU, Nvidia Quadro 8GB GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD. This laptop is a bit heavier but for some, that’s a positive factor, because it can mean that the parts/pieces of the laptop are heavier duty and should last longer than your typical laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad P40 Yoga

Here’s one I’ve personally not seen yet. The Lenovo P40 is a convertible workstation, so you can just pick it up, flip the screen over, and boom, it’s in tablet mode, easy as pie. Also the portability on this bad boy is the best in the class.

As for the components on this beasty convertible, a 2.5GHz intel i7 CPU, Nvidia Quadro GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD.  They put the best of the best in this laptop to ensure whatever the use may be this will suffice.

Our Take

Workstations can be used for multiple purposes, whether it be for work, studying, or even gaming on the side if that’s your kind of thing, but all-in-all it’s a beefed-up computer that will help you when you need it most for heavy duty use. Which workstation laptop out of the 5 do you like most?
