Disable your antivirus program

One of the main reasons as to why this problem will occur is because of the antivirus program you have installed in your computer. Try disabling this program then check if the issue still occurs.

Avast

  • Right-click on the avast! icon in the system tray. Select avast! shields control and there will be options to disable avast for 10 minutes, 1 hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently.

Bitdefender

  • Double click on the system icon for Bit Defender.
  • When the Bit Defender window appears, move the mouse arrow to the left side and click >> Virus Shield.
  • Move mouse arrow to the black check by Virus Shield is enabled and click.
  • The black works will change to red, >> Virus Shield is disabled.
  • Move mouse arrow to the top right corner and click the down arrows.
  • Bit Defender is now inactive.
  • To enable Bit Defender, do the same steps except click to enable.

Microsoft Security Essentials

  • Right-click on the MSE icon in the system tray and choose Open.
  • Click the Settings tab, then click Real Time Protection.
  • Uncheck the box next to “Turn on real time protection”.
  • Click the “Save changes” button.
  • Exit MSE when done.

ESET

  • Double click on the system tray icon to open the main application window.
  • Or via Start >> All Programs >> ESET >> ESET Smart Security.
  • Click Setup >> Antivirus and antispyware >> Temporarily disable Antivirus and antispyware protection.
  • When prompted to confirm temporarily disable select Yes.
  • Note: Protection will be automatically started after a system reboot.

McAfee

  • Navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for the McAfee icon.
  • Right-click it -> chose “Exit.”
  • A popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on “Yes” to disable the Antivirus guard.

Check the hard disk health

One factor that can cause this problem is the presence of bad sectors on the hard disk. You can run the CHKDSK command to detect and fix these bad sectors.

  • Right-click on the Drive which you wish to check and select Properties.
  • Click on the Tools tab and under Error-checking, click on the Check button.
  • If the system detects that there are errors, you will be asked to check the disk.
  • If errors are found, you will see the following message: “Restart your computer to repair the file system. You can restart right away or schedule the error fixing on next restart.”
  • Restart your computer.

Turn off Fast Startup

Fast startup allows your computer to boot faster allowing you to use the computer much quicker from shutdown. This will however sometimes cause issues as certain drivers will not be loaded properly. 

  • Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. 
  • Type “control panel” and hit Enter. This will launch your computer’s control panel.
  • In the control panel, click on Power Options.
  • In the Power Options, click on “Choose what the power buttons do” present at the left side of the screen.
  • You will see an option which requires administrative privileges named as “Change Settings that are currently unavailable”. Click it.
  • Go to the bottom of the screen and uncheck the box which says “Turn on fast startup”. Save changes and exit.
  • Restart your computer.

Update the display drivers

You will need to boot the computer in Safe Mode first.

  • Go to Start Menu and click on the Power button located on the bottom left pane.
  • While pressing the Shift key on the keyboard, click on the Restart option using the left mouse button. It would interrupt the normal start of PC by displaying a list of options to select from. Select Troubleshoot from the options and it would take you to the next screen.
  • On the next screen, click on the Advanced Options.
  • Inside the Advanced options screen, select the Startup Settings and restart your PC 
  • After the PC is rebooted, you will find a number of options to select from a list using F1 – F9 function keys. If you want to boot the computer into Safe Mode, press the F4, F5 or F6 function keys depending on your requirements. 
  • Your computer is now booted in Safe Mode.

When in Safe Mode proceed with the following steps

  • Right click on Windows key and select Device Manager from the list of options available.
  • Once in the device manager, expand the Display adapters section and right click on your display hardware. Select the option of Uninstall device. Windows will pop a dialogue box to confirm your actions, press Ok and proceed.
  • Restart your PC. Press Windows + S button to launch your start menu’s search bar. In the dialogue box type “Windows update”. Click the first search result which comes forward.
  • In the update settings, click on the button which says “Check for updates”. Now Windows will automatically check for updates available and install them. It may even prompt you for a restart.

Perform a system file checker

  • Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “taskmgr” in the dialogue box and hit Enter to launch your computer’s task manager.
  • Click on File option present at the top left side of the window and select “Run new task” from the list of options available.
  • Type “powershell” in the dialogue box and check the option underneath which states “Create this task with administrative privileges”.
  • In the Windows Powershell, type “sfc /scannow” and hit Enter. This process may take some time as your entire Windows files are being scanned by the computer and being checked for corrupt phases.
  • If you encounter an error where Windows states that it found some error but was unable to fix them, you should type “DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” in the PowerShell. This will download the corrupt files from the Windows update servers and replace the corrupt ones. Do note that this process can also consume some time according to your internet connection. Don’t cancel at any stage and let it run.
  • If an error was detected and was fixed using the above methods, restart your computer.
