How To Fix Skype Camera Not Working

Skype is a video conferencing application that was first released in 2003 that allows people to communicate via video, voice or text messages. It’s easy to use on a Windows 10 computer since the software is user friendly. Although this is a solid performing application there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Skype camera not working issue.

Skype Camera Is Not Working

When trying to make a video call you might experience a problem where the webcam not working or not detected. When this happens here’s how you can fix it.

Method 1: Make sure Windows 10 can detect your camera

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that your computer can detect your camera. If it is not detected then Skype won’t be able to detect it as well.

  1. Click on the Start button.

  3. Click on the Take Video button and record a few seconds of video.

In case you can’t record a video or if the camera is not detected then try disconnecting the webcam from its USB port then connect it to a different USB port. You should also try to restart the computer then repeat the steps listed above. If the problem persists then try using a different webcam.

Method 2: Update your webcam drivers to fix Skype camera not functioning

Sometimes this problem can be caused by outdated or corrupted webcam drivers which is why you will need to install the latest drivers.
Right click on the Start button.

  • Right click on the Start button.
  • Click on Device Manager.
  • Click the forward arrow just before Imaging devices.
  • Right click on your webcam then click on Update driver.
  • Click on Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • After the new driver has installed, restart your computer.

Method 3: Uninstall then reinstall Skype

There’s a possibility that the problem is caused by a corrupted Skype software or setting. If this is the case then reinstalling the application will fix the problem.

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on Settings.
  • Click on Apps.
  • Search for and click on the Skype application.
  • Click on Uninstall.

When the uninstall process has completed go to Skype.com and download the Skype for Desktop installer. Run the installer to install the app.
