Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and removes any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from software to hardware issue . Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.

Check your computer drivers

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to make sure that your computer has the latest drivers installed and that no component has a missing driver.

  • Right-click Start and run Device Manager.
  • Check each individual component by right clicking on it then click on Update Driver.
  • Choose the search automatically for updated driver software option
  • Restart the computer.

Check if your Windows computer still shuts down randomly.

Try to turn off the Sleep Mode setting

Sleep Mode can help extend the battery life of laptops as it will turn off certain functions of the computer. Sometimes though this can cause a complete shutdown of the system which is why you will need to turn off this feature.

  • Open Start.
  • Click on Settings.
  • Open System.
  • Set both Screen and Sleep to ‘Never’.

Observe if the shutdown issue still occurs.

Turn off Fast Startup

With fast startup enabled you can experience a faster booting process. This can however cause problems as certain drivers might not load properly. Try to disable fast startup to determine if this is the culprit.

  • Right-click Start and run Power Options.
  • In Power Options click ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.
  • Click ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.
  • Uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup (recommended)’ within the Shutdown settings.

  • Change the value from 100 to 0 in ‘Minimum processor state’.
  • Now, navigate to Hard Disk > ‘Turn off hard disk after’ and reduce the value until it shows Never. It goes both for ‘plugged in’ and ‘on battery’ for laptops.
  •  Save changes and Exit

Perform a clean install of Windows 10

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should reinstall Windows 10 on your computer.

  • Go to
  • Download and launch the Windows Refresh Tool
  • Review and Accept the License Terms to continue the process.
  • Select the files you want to keep.  If you want to keep your personal files, select the “Keep personal files only” option.
  • If you want to remove all files, select “Nothing”. It’s best to select Nothing but make sure you have already made a backup copy of your personal data.
  • Click Install to start the clean installation. The process is automatic, however in case you change your mind, you can cancel the process while the Windows 10 Setup dialog window is still shown.

Once the process is complete do not install any software on your computer. Try checking first if the issue still occurs. In case it doesn’t then the problem could have been caused by corrupted data or a software installed in your computer.

If the issue persists then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component. You should have this checked at a service center.
