  • Windows will start analyzing your machine. All your system files will be scanned along with your registry values.
  • If there is a newer version of the troubleshooter available, Windows will prompt that a newer edition would be more suitable for the troubleshooting. Click on the option of “Run the Windows 10 Windows Update Troubleshooter” if you are prompted.
  • Click on Next if a screen appears.
  • After the troubleshooter has analyzed your computer and registry values, it might prompt that either there are windows updates pending, the solution was fixed or the solution was not fixed. If you are prompted with a fix, click on “Apply this Fix”.
  • Windows will apply the fix and inform you of completion. Restart your computer for the changes to take place.

Another way to run the Windows update troubleshooter.

  • Press Windows + S to launch the start menu’s search bar. Type “troubleshoot” in the dialogue box and click on the first result which comes forth.
  • Select “Windows Update” and click the button “Run the troubleshooter”.
  • You might be prompted that the troubleshooter requires administrator access to check for problems with your system. Click the option “Try troubleshooting as an administrator”.
  • Restart your computer after the fixes have been made.

  • Type Command Prompt on the search bar then right click on the first result and select “Run as administrator”.
  • In the command prompt window type the following in order followed by pressing the Enter key.

  • Type net stop cryptsvc then press Enter.
  • Type ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old then press Enter.

Try to disable the antivirus

There’s a possibility that the antivirus software of your computer is blocking the update from being downloaded. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should try to temporarily disable the antivirus software.

If you are using Windows Security

  • Select Start Settings > Update & Security  – Windows Security – Virus & threat protection > Manage settings
  • Switch Real-time protection to OFF.  

If you are using Avast

  • Search for the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Avast shields control.
  • Locate the options to disable the program – the options are to disable it for 10 minutes, an hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently (until you yourself turn it back on). Select whatever option suits you best and use it to disable the program.

If you are using AVG

  • Search for the AVG icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Temporarily disable AVG protection.
  • Choose how long you want AVG to be turned off and whether you want AVG to disable its Firewall too.
  • Click on OK to disable the antivirus program.

If you are using McAfee

  • Search for the McAfee Antivirus icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Exit.
  • You should see a dialog box warning you that McAfee‘s protection will be turned off. Click on Yes in this dialog box to disable the antivirus program

Make sure your computer has the correct time and date

If the incorrect time and date of your computer is set then this problem can occur.

  • Type “Settings” in the search bar and open the result.
  • Go to Time & Language
  • Check if your date and time are set correctly. If not, uncheck the options which say “Set Time Automatically” and “Set Timezone Automatically”.
  • Click “Change” underneath Change date and time. Set your time accordingly and also select your appropriate time zone. Also, disable “Auto-sync time”.
  • Press Windows + S again and type “Language” in the dialogue box. Open the first result which comes forth.
  • In the language settings, try using English United Kingdom/US.
  • Click on “Additional time, date & regional settings”.

Try toggling the internet connection

Sometimes this problem can be caused by connectivity issues. If you are connecting to the internet using a Wi-Fi connection then try toggling the Wi-Fi switch of your computer. 

  • Click on the Network Icon present at the bottom right-side of the screen.
  • Click on “Airplane mode” once and your internet will be disabled.
  • Wait for a minute then click on Airplane mode again to disable it.
  • If you are connecting to the internet using an Ethernet connection then just simply disconnect the Ethernet cord from the computer and wait for a minute before connecting it again.

Try installing through Microsoft Website in Clean Boot

  • Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. 
  • Type “msconfig” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • Go to the Services tab present at the top of the screen. Check the line which says “Hide all Microsoft services”. Once you click this, all Microsoft related services will be disabled leaving behind all the third-party services.
  • Click the “Disable All” button present at the near bottom at the left side of the window. All the third-party services will now be disabled.
  • Click Apply to save changes and exit.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click the option of “Open Task Manager”. You will be redirected to the task manager where all the applications/services which run when your computer starts will be listed.
  • Select each service one by one and click “Disable” at the bottom right side of the window.

  • You will see an “Update Now” button present at the top of the screen. Click it to download follow the on-screen instructions for the update assistant to be installed. After the update assistant is installed, your Windows will start to update.
