  • If there is a newer version of the troubleshooter available, Windows will prompt that a newer edition would be more suitable for the troubleshooting. Click on the option of “Run the Windows 10 Windows Update Troubleshooter” if you are prompted.
  • Click on Next if a screen appears.
  • After the troubleshooter has analyzed your computer and registry values, it might prompt that either there are windows updates pending, the solution was fixed or the solution was not fixed. If you are prompted with a fix, click on “Apply this Fix”.
  • Windows will apply the fix and inform you of completion. Restart your computer for the changes to take place.

  • Press Windows + S to launch the start menu’s search bar. Type “troubleshoot” in the dialogue box and click on the first result which comes forth.

  • You might be prompted that the troubleshooter requires administrator access to check for problems with your system. Click the option “Try troubleshooting as an administrator”.

Try to disable the antivirus

There’s a possibility that the antivirus software of your computer is blocking the update from being downloaded. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should try to temporarily disable the antivirus software.

If you are using Windows Security

  • Select Start Settings > Update & Security  – Windows Security – Virus & threat protection > Manage settings
  • Switch Real-time protection to OFF.  

If you are using Avast

  • Search for the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Avast shields control.

If you are using McAfee

  • Search for the McAfee Antivirus icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Exit.
  • You should see a dialog box warning you that McAfee‘s protection will be turned off. Click on Yes in this dialog box to disable the antivirus program

Make sure your computer has the correct time and date

  • Type “Settings” in the search bar and open the result.

  • Check if your date and time are set correct. If not, uncheck the options which say “Set Time Automatically” and “Set Timezone Automatically”.
  • Click “Change” underneath Change date and time. Set your time accordingly and also select your appropriate time zone. Also, disable “Auto-sync time”.

Sometimes this problem can be caused by connectivity issues. If you are connecting to the internet using a Wi-Fi connection then try toggling the Wi-Fi switch of your computer.

  • Click on “Airplane mode” once and your internet will be disabled.
  • Wait for a minute then click on Airplane mode again to disable it.

  • Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. 
  • Type “msconfig” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • Go to the Services tab present at the top of the screen. Check the line which says “Hide all Microsoft services”. Once you click this, all Microsoft related services will be disabled leaving behind all the third-party services.
  • Click the “Disable All” button present at the near bottom at the left side of the window. All the third-party services will now be disabled.
  • Click Apply to save changes and exit.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click the option of “Open Task Manager”. You will be redirected to the task manager where all the applications/services which run when your computer starts will be listed.
  • Select each service one by one and click “Disable” at the bottom right side of the window.
