How To Fix Black Screen in Overwatch Issue

Overwatch is a popular team based first shooter game that’s developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, and Nintendo Switch platforms. A team must work together to secure and defend control points on a map or escort a payload across the map in a set amount of time. Although this is quite a solid game there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the black screen in Overwatch issue.

How To Fix Black Screen in Overwatch Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a misconfigured setting to a corrupted cache. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.

Try changing the game settings

There are times when the game settings are misconfigured which can then lead to this problem.

  • Open up the “Geforce Experience”
  • Click on Games and select Overwatch from the left pane
  • Click on the “Custom Setting” icon
  • Select “Borderless Window” in the Display Mode option.

Check if the black screen in Overwatch issue still occurs.

Try scanning and repairing the game files

One factor that can cause this problem is a corrupted game file. If this is the culprit then you will need to repair the file or files.

  • Open the Blizzard Client and click on “Games”
  • From the right pane click on the Overwatch icon
  • Click on the “Options” button on the top left side.
  • Select “Scan and Repair” from the list of options available.
  • Click on “Begin Scan” when the message prompts you to.
  • It  might take some time to wait for the launcher to finish the process
  • When finished try to “Run” your game

Delete the game cache

A corrupted game cached data can be causing this problem. You can delete the cache to check if this is what’s causing the problem.

  • Open the Task Manager by pressing “Ctrl+Shift+Esc”
  • Click on the “More Details”  button to open up a detailed version of the program
  • In the Processes Tab,  if an “agent.exe” or a “Blizzard Update Client” is running select it and press End Process button on the bottom of the program.
  • Now press Windows key + R to open up the “Run Prompt“
  • Type “%Programdata%” in it and press Enter.
  • Delete the “Blizzard Entertainment” folder inside the directory
  • Restart the Blizzard client then run the game

Disable the Game DVR

The Game DVR allows you to record your gameplay which can be a great way to share it however this can sometimes cause frame drops which usually leads to this problem.

  • Open the Start Menu and click on the Settings icon
  • Click on “Gaming”
  • Select “Game Bar” from the sidebar
  • Disable every option inside this.
  • Select “Game DVR”
  • Disable every option inside this
  • Similarly, select “True Play” and turn it off
  • Run your game

Check if the black screen in Overwatch issue still occurs.

Try deleting the Battle.net tools

Sometimes the problem can be caused by an outdated or corrupted Blizzard Battle.net desktop app. Try to  deleting the Battle.net files. The Blizzard Client will automatically reinstall them later.

  • Open the Task Manager by pressing “Ctrl+Shift+Esc”
  • Click on the “More Details”  button to open up a detailed version of the program
  • In the Processes Tab,  if an “agent.exe” or a “Blizzard Update Client” is running select it and press End Process button on the bottom of the program.
  • Press Windows +R key to open up the “Run Prompt”
  • Type “C:\ProgramData\” In the open field and press “Enter”
  • Delete the Battle.net folder inside the directory
  • Run the Blizzard Client
