How to Fix Denied Permission To Access This Folder In Windows 10

Try changing the ownership of the folder

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to take ownership of the folder. This allows you to gain control of the system file or folder and even a file or folder created by another user. Make sure that you are logged in using an administrator account when you perform this procedure.

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Browse and find the file or folder you want to have full access.
  • Right-click it, and select Properties.
  • Click the Security tab to access the NTFS permissions.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • On the “Advanced Security Settings” page, you need to click the Change link, in the Owner’s field.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click the Find Now button.
  • From the search result, select your user account, and click OK.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click OK.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.
  • Click OK one more time to complete this task.

If the folder you would like to gain access to also has sub-folders  you can check the Replace ownership on subcontainers and object option in the Advanced Security Settings page to take control of these folders.

  • Right-click the file or folder and select Properties.
  • Click the Security tab to access the NTFS permissions.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Under the Permissions tab, click Add.
  • Click Select a principal to add your user account.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click the Find Now button.
  • From the search result, select your user account, and click OK.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click OK.
  • On “Permission Entry”, check the Full control option.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK to close the file or folder properties to complete the task.

Try checking if the denied permission to access this folder  issue still occurs.

Close the Shared Folder Sessions

  • Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu.
  • Select Computer Management from the menu
  • When Computer Management opens, navigate to System Tools > Shared Folders > Sessions.
  • You should now see all available sessions. Right click them and choose Close Session from the menu. In addition, you can also right click Sessions in the left pane and choose Disconnect All Sessions.
  • Close Computer Management

Try to check if the denied permission error still occurs.

Create a new group and add your user account to it

What you will want to do is to create a new group then give ownership of the folder to this new group.

To create the group

  • Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog. Enter lusrmgr.msc and press Enter or click OK
  • When Local Users and Groups window opens, select Groups in the left pane. Right click Groups and choose New Group.
  • New Group window will appear. Enter the desired Group name. Now click the Add button
  • In Enter the object names to select field enter your username or Microsoft account email. Click Check Names. If your input is valid, click OK.
  • Click the Create button to create a new group

To give ownership of the folder to the group

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Browse and find the file or folder you want to have full access.
  • Right-click it, and select Properties.
  • Click the Security tab to access the NTFS permissions.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • On the “Advanced Security Settings” page, you need to click the Change link, in the Owner’s field.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click Find Now button.
  • From the search result, select the newly created account, and click OK.
  • On the “Select User or Group” page, click OK.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.
  • Click OK one more time to complete this task.

Check if the folder permission error in Windows 10 still occurs.
