Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.
One of the main causes of this problem is a bug in the software update. Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.
Uninstall then reinstall the Photos app
If your Photos app is corrupted then it can cause this particular problem. To fix this you will need to get a fresh version of the Photos app.
To uninstall the app
- Close the Photos app if you currently have it open
- In the the Cortana/Search Windows box type powershell
- Click on ‘Windows PowerShell’ when it appears – right click on it and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
- In the PowerShell window enter the following command: Get-AppxPackage *photo* | Remove-AppxPackage
- A ‘Deployment operation progress …’ message will temporarily appear. When this goes the uninstall has finished
- The Photos app will now be gone and the Windows Photo Viewer will now be used to open your images.
To install the app
- Open the Windows Store
- Search for the Microsoft Photos app then download it.
Check if the file system error 2147219196 when opening Microsoft Photos app issue still occurs.
Perform a clean boot
Sometimes this problem can be caused by as third part app installed on your computer. To check if this is the case, you will need to do a clean boot.
- Log in with an Administrator account.
- Press “Windows” + “R” to open up the “RUN” prompt
- Type in “msconfig” and press “Enter“
- Click on the “Services” option and uncheck the “Hide all Microsoft Services” button
- Click on the “Disable All” option and then on “OK“.
- Click on the “Startup” tab and click on the “Open Task Manager” option
- Click on the “Startup” button in the task manager.
- Click on any application in the list that has “Enabled” written next to it and select the “Disable” option.
- Repeat this process for all applications in the list and restart your computer.
- You computer is now in the“Clean Boot” state.
- Open the Windows Photo Viewer application and check if the issue persists.
- If the issue goes away, repeat the above process and enable one service at a time.
- Identify the service by enabling which the issue comes back and keep it disabled to fix the issue.
Update Windows 10
Since this issue is most likely caused by a software bug it’s best to check if there are any software updates available and install them.
- Press “Windows” + “I” buttons simultaneously.
- Click on the “Update & Security” option.
- Select the “Check for Updates” option and wait while Windows checks for new updates.
- Updates will be automatically downloaded and installed.
- Restart the computer.
