Although this is a solid device there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Kindle not showing up on PC issue.

How To Fix Kindle Not Showing Up On PC Issue

The correct way to connect the Kindle device to your computer and transfer files is as follows.

  • Connect the small end of a USB cable to the micro-USB port on the bottom of the Kindle device.
  • Insert the other end of the USB cable into your computer’s USB port. The computer automatically recognizes the Kindle.
  • Click the Start button, then click “Computer.” Double-click the Kindle icon.
  • Drag and drop downloaded files into the Documents folder in the Kindle window.
  • Click the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the bottom-right corner of the system tray. Click on the Kindle to safely eject it from the computer.
  • Disconnect the Kindle from the computer.

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a faulty cord to a wrong setting. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.

Make sure the USB cord is working

To connect the KIndle to your computer you will need a USB cord. If the cord that you are using is defective then this problem can occur. Try using a different USB cord and try connecting the cord to a different USB port on the computer.

Check the connection settings

  • Connect the Kindle to a working USB port on your computer and turn off your Kindle completely. Try turning it back on and see if the computer detects the hardware. To restart Kindle, press and hold the power button for ~40 seconds. If the restart process gets initiated, release it.
  • Connect the Kindle to your PC and open your Kindle. Slide down to reveal the sliding menu and you will see connection options in the notification bar. Set the option “Connect as camera”. Check if it is detected.
  • You can use Calibre to connect Kindle to your PC. Turn off PC and Kindle and disconnect all the cables attached. After turning your PC back on, open Calibre and connect Kindle to PC. Turn on Kindle now and see if the connection is successful.
  • Make sure that the PIN authentication is turned off for your Kindle. There is an option in Kindle which provides an extra layer of security. You can either disable the feature altogether or make sure that you enter your PIN when connection.
  • Enable Android Debug Bridge (ADB) on your Kindle. You can try both (disabling and enabling) and see which one fixes the problem for you. You can easily change this setting by navigating to Settings > Device > Turn ADB on/off.

  • Make sure the latest version of the Kindle application is installed on Kindle.

Install Kindle as an MTP device

  • Press Windows + R, type “devmgmt.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • In the device manager, expand the category “Portable device”. Either this or Kindle will be listed as a device with a small yellow exclamation mark. Right-click it and select Update driver.
  • Select the second option “Browse my computer for driver software”.
  • Select the option “Let me pick from a list of available drivers for my computer”.
  • Select Portable Devices and search through the list until you find the MTP driver. You can uncheck “Only show compatible drivers” to get a greater list. Restart your computer after applying the changes

Disable USB selective suspend

  • Press Windows + R to launch your computer’s Run application. Type “control panel” in the dialogue box and hit Enter.
  • Select “Hardware and Sound” from the list of categories.
  • Click on “Power Options”. A new window will appear consisting of all the power plans your computer has. Select the one you are using and click on “Change plan settings”.
  • Navigate to the advanced settings, click “Change advanced power settings”.
  • Search for USB settings from the list of options and click on it to expand. You will see another title named “USB selective suspend settings”. Click it again to expand and select Disabled in both cases (On battery and Plugged in). Save changes and exit.
  • Restart the computer and the Kindle device.
