Before performing the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem I suggest that you try restarting your computer first. This will refresh the operating system as well as remove corrupt temporary data and is quite effective in fixing most software related issues.
There are several factors that can cause this problem ranging from the display connected to the wrong port to a corrupted driver. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.
Check the display connection
The first thing you will want to do is to make sure that the monitor is connected to the correct port. Your desktop computer will usually have an Intel integrated graphics port and the NVIDIA discrete graphics port. Make sure to connect your monitor to the NVIDIA discrete graphics port.

Check the NVIDIA Display Driver Service
The NVIDIA Display Driver Service manages the display driver and acts as a middleman between the NVIDIA graphics card and the Windows operating system. If this service is stopped then this issue can occur. Make sure to turn on this service if it is off.
- Press Windows + R, type “services.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
- Go through all the services until you find NVIDIA Display Driver Service. Right-click it and select Properties.
- Set the Startup type to Automatic then press the Start button on the Service Status section. Press Apply then OK..

Reinstall NVIDIA Drivers
One last troubleshooting step that you should do in case the above steps fails to fix the problem is to uninstall then reinstall the NVIDIA drivers.
Uninstall the drivers
- Remove all existing and previous NVIDIA Graphics drivers and related software using the Display Driver Uninstall Utility (DDU) which you can get from https://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/17830/
Reinstall the drivers
- Download the latest version of your NVIDIA driver from https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
- Install the drivers you downloaded by launching the executable, and while installing, select Custom (Advanced) and select Perform a clean installation. This will further wipe previous installations and then install the latest working version.
- Restart your PC to complete the installation.
