How To Increase Download Speed On PS4 Quick and Easy Way

The PlayStation is a popular gaming console that was first released in 2013. The latest version of this console is the PS4 Pro which is capable of playing the latest games in 4K resolution at faster frame rates. Although this is a solid device there are instances when some issues can occur which can become quite annoying. One such issue which we will be dealing with today is to increase download speed on PS4.

How To Increase Download Speed On PS4

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your PS4 and modem/router first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

The download speed that you will be getting on your PS4 will depend on what your  internet speed is. Let’s say that you have a fast internet connection but you are getting a slow download speed on your PS4 then there are several steps that you can do to improve this.

Update the PS4 firmware

If your PS4  has an outdated firmware then this could be what’s causing the problem. A newer firmware means that it is an improved version that has fewer hiccups. Make sure that the PS4 is connected to the internet when downloading the new firmware version.

  • From the Home screen, go to [Settings] then select [System Software Update] and press the X button. If you didn’t start any other applications or games, select [Upgrade Now]. Otherwise, save your game data in the game, then close it.
  • If there is an update available, the version number will be listed on the next screen. Select [Next] and press the X button. The next screen will show you the download progress.
  • Once the download is complete, read System Software License Agreement. If you agree, select [Accept] and press the X button to confirm your choice.
  • The PS4  will prepare the system for the update. This process will take a couple of minutes to complete. The PS4  will then restart and perform the update.
  • After the update is completed, the PS4™ will restart another time. Once it is finished booting up, press the PlayStation button on your controller and sign in with your user profile
  • If the next screen suggests adding an account on PlayStation Network (PSN), you may either use an existing account or create a new account. Select [Next] to sign in with your existing account (or create a new one). Select [Skip] to sign in or sign up for PSN later. To create a new account, from the PS4  sign-in screen select [New User] > [Create a New User] and follow the on-screen prompts to create an account.
  • Your system is now updated.

Use a wired connection

If you are experiencing a slow download speed when the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network then you should consider using a wired ethernet connection as this is usually a more stable way of connecting the PS4 to the modem router.

Pause and resume the download

Sometimes the problem can be fixed simply by stopping then resuming the download.

  • From the PS4 dashboard go to the Downloads tab.
  • Select the game you’re currently downloading and tap the X button.
  • Select Pause from the drop-down menu
  • With the download paused, wait for 5 to 10 seconds.
  • Select Resume and watch the download speed improve

Change the DNS and MTU Settings

This setting is automatically setup by the PS4 however you can change this to improve the download speed.

  • From the dashboard of your PS4 go to Settings (briefcase icon).
  • From there, go to Network and select Set Up Internet connection. If you want to go with cable, select Use LAN Cable, otherwise choose Use Wi-Fi.
  • Make sure you select the Custom network creation mode. Otherwise, the method won’t be possible.
  • Under IP Address Settings, select “Automatic”
  • Under DHCP Host Name, make sure you select Do Not Specify.
  • Under DNS Settings, select Manual
  • You will be prompted to insert the Primary and Secondary DNS. You can use Google DNS: Primary DNS – 8.8.8.8, Secondary DNS – 8.8.4.4
  • Under MTU Settings, select Manual.
  • In the MTU menu, insert 1473. If that doesn’t work on your console, try 1450. Hit Next once you’re done
  • Once you reach the Proxy Server, select Do Not Use
  • Once you’re done, measure your internet connection by selecting Test Internet Connection. If you don’t see an improvement, don’t be discouraged. Try downloading a game and see how it goes.
