How To Fix SteamVR Error 308 Issue

SteamVR is a new way to experience your favorite Steam games. For this to work you will need a VR headset, a controller, and your computer with VR games installed. This is quite a new technology but it is slowly becoming more popular with the release of VR games. Although this is a solid platform there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the SteamVR error 308 issue.

How To Fix SteamVR Error 308 Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a corrupted temporary file to lack of administrative privileges. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.

SteamVR minimum system requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4590/AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later, windows 10
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or better
  • Pixel shader: 5.1
  • Vertex shader: 5.1
  • Dedicated video RAM: 4096 MB

SteamVR recommended system requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4590/AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later, Windows 10
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, AMD Radeon RX 480 equivalent or better
  • Pixel shader: 5.1
  • Vertex shader: 5.1
  • Dedicated video RAM: 4096 MB

Provide elevate access

The first thing you need to do in this case is to make sure to give elevated access to the SteamVR software. 

  • Go to the installation directory of SteamVR.
  • Right-click on the application’s executable and select Properties.
  • Once in Properties, select the Compatibility
  • Now check the option “Run this program as an administrator”.
  • Click Apply and exit. 
  • Restart your computer 

Check if the SteamVR error 308 issue still occurs.

 

End all SteamVR and Vice Processes

Steam has several processes that will run in the background. If a process gets an error then this problem could occur. To fix this you will have to end all Steam related processes.

  • Press Windows + R, type “taskmgr” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • In the task manager, select the tab of Processes.
  • Select all processes of SteamVR and Vice. Select them one by one, right-click on them and select End task.
  • After finishing all the process, try launching SteamVR again.

Check if the SteamVR error 308 issue still occurs.

Delete temporary files

Windows applications will usually have cached data which allows them  to run better. There are however instances when this cached data can get corrupted which results in this problem. If this is what’s causing the problem then you have to delete the temporary files of SteamVR.

  • Make sure that you Exit Steam properly using the task manager.
  • Press Windows + E and go to the following directory: C:\Users\Strix\AppData\Local\openvr\openvrpaths.vrpath
  • 400″>If you can’t see the AppData folder on your computer, you need to enable hidden files. Select View from the top of your Windows Explorer and select Options > Change folder and search options. Select the tab View and then check the option Show hidden files, folders and drives underneath the heading Hidden files and folders. Click Apply to save changes.
  • Right-click on openvr\openvrpaths.vrpath and select Delete.
  • Restart your computer 

Check if the SteamVR error 308 issue still occurs.

Reinstall SteamVR
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should consider reinstalling SteamVR.

  • Press Windows + R, type “appwiz.cpl” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • Search for SteamVR. Right-click on the application and select Uninstall. 
  • Restart your computer. 
  • Go to Steam’s official website and download the installation files for the application. Run the executable as an administrator and let the installation process finish.
  • Restart your computer again and then launch SteamVR as an administrator.

Check if the SteamVR error 308 issue still occurs.
