How To Fix PS4 NAT Type Failed Issue The Easy Way

The PlayStation 4, commonly abbreviated as the PS4, is an eight generation gaming console which was first released by Sony in 2013. Since its release there have been several versions of this model with the latest being the PS4 Pro which is able to support 4K resolution games. Although this is a solid performing device there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the PS4 NAT type failed issue.

How To Fix The PS4 NAT Type Failed Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your PS4 first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a wrong setting to a router issue. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.

NAT or Network Address Translation basically translates a public IP address into a private IP address and vice versa. This is needed by the PS4 device to communicate with other PS4 devices. NAT usually operates on a router. It connects two networks together then translates the private addresses in the internal network into legal addresses, before packets are forwarded to another network.

You will usually get the “PS4 NAT type failed” error message when there is an incorrect network settings.

Manually configure the PS4 network settings

The first thing you need to do in this case is to try to manually configure the settings.  Frist, check the IP address used by the PS4.

  • Navigate to the main screen of your PS4 and open your Settings. Once in Settings, click on the sub-category of Network.
  • Click on the option “View Connection Status”.
  • The IP address allocated to the PS4 console will be listed.

If the IP address is causing the problem then you will need another computer, preferably a laptop, to fix this.

  • On the computer (which is connected to the same network as the PS4), press Windows + R, type “cmd” and press Enter.
  • Once in command prompt, execute the following command: ipconfig/all
  • Take note of the IP address, the default gateway, subnet mask and the DNS server.
  • Go to PS4 Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
  • Select Use WiFi if you are connecting to WiFi, or select Use a LAN Cable if you are connecting to the Ethernet.
  • Select Custom, then enter the network information you just noted down.
  • Select Do Not Use as for Proxy Server.
  • Wait for it to update. When you see Internet settings updated, select Test Internet Connection.
  • You’ll see your PS4 Internet connection and know the NAT Type.

Enable Universal PnP on the router

UPnP, which means Universal Plug n Play, allows the device to discover the router to make an internet connection. Enabling UPnP can improve the connection when playing a game or chatting with a friend.

  • Log into your router. To log in, you have to enter the IP address associated with the router which is also listed on the backside or at its box. The IP should look something like ‘192.168.1.1’ or ‘192.168.8.1’ etc. Enter the necessary details and gain access.
  • Go to the UPnP menu and enable the service. Every router has its own layout of settings so you have to search through them or refer to the manual to find where it is located.
  •  save changes and power cycle both the devices. After getting them back on, check your internet connection on your PS4 and see if the correct NAT type is now selected.

Enable the DMZ Server

Another troubleshooting step you can do is to enable the DMZ ( Demilitarized Zone) server.  DMZ is a logical or physical subnetwork which exposes a network’s external-facing services to an untrusted network. This untrusted network is the internet.

  • Go to the network settings on your PS4 and note down the IP address.
  • Log into your router. To log in, you have to enter the IP address associated with the router which is also listed on the backside or at its box. The IP should look something like ‘192.168.1.1’ or ‘192.168.8.1’ etc. Enter the necessary details and gain access.
  • Open up the DMZ menu on your router. This menu may either be present in the NAT sub-category or in forwarding.
  • Enter the IP address of the PS4 here and apply changes.
  • Save all your changes and exit.
  • Restart the PS4 and the router.

Forward ports to your network

One last troubleshooting step to consider is port forwarding. This is the act of redirecting a communication request from one address and port number combination to another while the packets are travelling a network gateway such as a router.

  • Log into your router. To log in, you have to enter the IP address associated with the router which is also listed on the backside or at its box. The IP should look something like ‘192.168.1.1’ or ‘192.168.8.1’ etc. Enter the necessary details and gain access.
  • Now navigate to Port Forwarding Before we proceed to add the ports in the forwarding table, it is advised that you make sure that your PS4 is given a name and an IP address should be assigned to each of these ports.
  • Add the following ports on the port forwarding table on your router: 80(TCP), 443(TCP), 3478(TCP and UDP), 3479(TCP and UDP), 3480(TCP).
  • Save the settings.
  • Restart the router.
