An SSD or Solid State Drive is a storage device that stored data in flash memory instead of a physical spinning disk such as the one used on an electromechanical drive such as HDD. This gives the SSD a much faster performance compared to the HDD. While installing an SSD on your computer is quite easy, there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will show you how to fix SSD not showing up in disk management issue.
How To Fix SSD Not Showing Up In Disk Management Issue
Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.
There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from incompatibility issues with the storage controller to a wrong SATA storage controller mode. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.
Use the Troubleshooter
The first thing that you will need to do is to use the Troubleshooting tool of windows 10 which is used to automatically fix common problems.
- Type “Control Panel” on the search bar then click on the result.
- Type Troubleshooting on the search bar of Control Panel then click on the result.
- Click on View All on the left panel of the screen.
- Click on Hardware and Devices.
- Click on Next in the popup window and follow the instructions. The troubleshooter will scan for problems.
- After the scan is complete, click “Apply this fix” to resolve your issue.
- Restart the computer.

Update the motherboard storage controller and IDE ATA controllers drivers
There’s a possibility that the problem is caused by an outdated storage controller and IDE ATA controller driver. Make sure that you have the latest drivers installed as this might fix the problem.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run
- Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter to open device manager
- Expand the “Storage Controllers” section
- Right click on your controller and select “Update driver software”
- On the next window click “Search automatically for updated driver software”
- Device manager will search for drivers online and install them.
- Repeat the process for the “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers” section
- Restart your computer

Uninstall then reinstall the IDE ATA storage controller driver
- Press Windows key + R to open Run
- Type “devmgmt.msc” and hit enter to open device manager
- Expand the “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers” section
- Right click on your controller and select “Uninstall device”
- Confirm that you want to uninstall the drivers by clicking “Uninstall” on the warning
- Wait for the uninstallation to complete and restart your computer. Windows will automatically install the correct storage controller drivers.

Run the memory diagnostic tool
- Press Windows key + R to open Run
- Type mdsched.exe and hit enter to open Windows memory diagnostic
- Choose to restart the computer and run the tool immediately.
- Windows Memory Diagnostics runs automatically after the computer restarts and performs a standard memory test automatically. If you want to perform fewer or more tests, press F1, use the Up and Down arrow keys to set the Test Mix as Basic, Standard, or Extended, and then press F10 to apply the desired settings and resume testing.
- When testing is completed, the computer restarts automatically. You’ll see the test results in event viewer when you log on.

Change SATA controller mode
- Switch off your PC and restart it
- Quickly press F2 or F10 to boot into BIOS
- Go to the “Advanced” tab and scroll down to “SATA Controller Mode.”
- Select the SATA port though which your SSD is connected (usually SATA1; SATA0 is occupied by the primary HDD). Press enter and choose a mode e.g. AHCI.
- Go to Exit and Exit after saving changes.
- Restart the computer.
