The Windows 10 error 1713 usually occurs when trying to install a Microsoft Office product. The exact error you will be getting is “Error 1713 — MSI_package_name cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group”. This can happen when trying to install Office 365 or Office 2016 or other standalone Office products. There are several factors that can cause this particular problem to occur such as but not limited to a corrupt download or incomplete installation of the Microsoft Office software, a Microsoft Office registry corruption following a recent update related to Microsoft, or a corruption related to a virus or malware. We will take a look at some of the troubleshooting steps that you can do to fix this problem.

How To Fix Error 1713 When Installing Microsoft Office

Completely uninstall the previous version of Microsoft Office

One of the main causes of this issue is a conflict with the file of an older Office installation. It is therefore a good idea to start the troubleshooting by completely removing any traces of the old Office version from your computer.

First determine what type of Office installation you have. There are generally three installation types.

  • Click-to-Run: a new way to install and update Office over the Internet and it works similarly to streaming video. By default, the latest version of Office which is included in Office 365, and most one-time purchases of Office 2019 and Office 2016 products (such as Office Home & Business are installed by using Click-to-Run.
  • MS(also known as the Microsoft Windows Installer): the traditional way of installing Office via a local installation resource.
  • Microsoft Store app:  an installation of Office from the Microsoft Store on some windows 10 computers.

  • Find the Office 16 installation folder, typically located in C:\Program Files\.
  • Right-click the Microsoft Office 16 folder and select Delete.
  • Open a Command Prompt window as an administrator.
  • At the command prompt, type the following commands.
  • Type schtasks.exe /delete /tn “\Microsoft\Office\Office Automatic Updates” then press enter
  • Type schtasks.exe /delete /tn “\Microsoft\Office\Office Subscription Maintenance” then press enter
  • Type schtasks.exe /delete /tn “\Microsoft\Office\Office ClickToRun Service Monitor” then press enter
  • Type schtasks.exe /delete /tn “\Microsoft\Office\OfficeTelemetryAgentLogOn2016” then press enter
  • Type schtasks.exe /delete /tn “\Microsoft\Office\OfficeTelemetryAgentFallBack2016” then press enter
  • Open Task Manager.
  • Click the Process tab.
  • If the following processes are running, right-click each one, and then click End task: OfficeClickToRun.exe, OfficeC2RClient.exe, AppVShNotify.exe, setup*.exe
  • Open a Command Prompt window as an administrator, type the following command, and then press Enter: sc delete ClickToRunSvc
  • Press Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • In the Open box, type %ProgramFiles%, and then click OK.
  • Delete the “Microsoft Office 16” folder.
  • Delete the “Microsoft Office” folder.
  • Open the Run dialog box, type %ProgramFiles(x86)%, and then click OK.
  • Delete the “Microsoft Office” folder.
  • Open the Run dialog box, type %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared and then click OK.
  • Delete the “ClickToRun” folder.
  • Open the Run dialog box, type %ProgramData%\Microsoft, and then click OK.
  • Delete the ClickToRun folder. If the folder does not exist, go to the next step.
  • Open the Run dialog box, type %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Office, and then click OK.
  • Delete the ClickToRunPackagerLocker file.
  • Open Registry Editor.
  • Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun
  • Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppVISV
  • Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft Office <Edition> – en-us
  • Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
  • Delete the Office key.
  • Open a Command Prompt window as an administrator.
  • Type %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, and then press Enter.
  • Delete the “Microsoft Office 2016 Tools” folder.
  • Delete each of the “<application> 2016” shortcuts for each of the Office 2016 applications. For example, “Word 2016”, “Excel 2016”, “PowerPoint 2016”.

Once this is done uninstall the Office 16 Click-To-Run Licensing Component, Extensibility Component and Localization Component.

  • Open a Command Prompt window as an administrator.
  • At the command prompt, type the command that is appropriate for your operating system

If you’re running an x86 version of Office 2016 on an x64 operating system

  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008F-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}

If you’re running an x86 version of Office 2016 on an x86 operating system

  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-007E-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}

If you’re running an x64 version of Office 2016 on an x64 operating system

  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-007E-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}
  • MsiExec.exe /X{90160000-008C-0409-1000-0000000FF1CE}

Microsoft Store App

  • Select Start  > Settings > Apps.
  • Under Apps & Features select the version of Office you want to uninstall.
  • Select Uninstall.

Once the previous version of Microsoft Office has been completely uninstalled try to check if the same Windows 10 error 1713  issue occurs when installing a new version of Office.

Turn off the Firewall

One factor that can cause this problem is the firewall which could be preventing certain components of the installer from being installed. Try turning off the firewall then check if the issue still occurs.

  • Type “firewall” in the search box, and click Windows Defender Firewall
  • Click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off to open firewall settings.
  • Click the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall radio buttons, and select the OK option.

Turn off the antivirus

Just like the firewall, the antivirus software can also interfere with the installation process which is why you need to try turning this off.

If you are using Windows Security

  • Select Start  – Settings  > Update & Security  – Windows Security – Virus & threat protection > Manage settings
  • Switch Real-time protection to Off.

If you are using Avast

  • Search for the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Avast shields control.
  • Locate the options to disable the program – the options are to disable it for 10 minutes, an hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently (until you yourself turn it back on). Select whatever option suits you best and use it to disable the program.

If you are using AVG

  • Search for the AVG icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Temporarily disable AVG protection.
  • Choose how long you want AVG to be turned off and whether you want AVG to disable its Firewall too.
  • Click on OK to disable the antivirus program.

If you are using McAfee

  • Search for the McAfee Antivirus icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Exit.
  • You should see a dialog box warning you that McAfee‘s protection will be turned off. Click on Yes in this dialog box to disable the antivirus program

Check if the Windows 10 error 1713 issue still occurs.

Run a file system scan

This tool will scan your system files for any errors and try to fix them.

  • Type cmd in the search bar.
  • Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” in the command prompt window, and press the enter button.
  • Input “sfc /scannow” and press the Enter key
  • Restart the computer if the scan finishes repairing system files.

Check if the error still occurs.

Use CCleaner to run a registry scan

One factor that can cause this problem is leftover registry files. Use CCleaner to remove these files.

  • Download the free version of CCleaner from https://www.ccleaner.com/.
  • Install and run the downloaded file.
  • Open the CCleaner window, and click the Registry tab.
  • Select all the registry check boxes, and press the Scan for Issues button.
  • Click the Fix selected issues button.
  • Click Fix All Selected Issues to confirm.
