Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.
There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a software glitch to a conflict with the antivirus. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.
Perform a hard reboot
While restarting the computer will usually fix this problem there are cases when after the computer restarts the issue will still occur. When this happens then you should try a hard reboot.
- Press and hold the Power button until your PC turns off. You can do this from the Windows update screen (where the update is stuck)
- Wait for 45 seconds
- Disconnect the Power supply.
- Press and hold the Power button for at least 15 seconds.
- Wait 5 minutes
- Connect the Power supply.
- Turn ON your computer

Try doing the update in clean boot
If the issue is caused due to a conflict with a software installed in your computer then you can try doing the update in clean boot. Take note that performing the steps listed below will make you lose all the update progress. You will have to start the Windows update again.
- Press the Power Button and hold it until your computer turns off.
- Press the Power Button again to start your computer.
- Once you are logged in the Windows successfully, Hold Windows key and Press R
- Type msconfig and press Enter
- Click the Services tab
- Check the option Hide All Microsoft Services
- Click the button Disable All
- Click the Startup tab
- Click Open Task Manager
- Make sure the Startup tab is selected
- Select the first service in the list and click Disable. Repeat this for all the items in the list.
- Once done, Close the Task Manager
- Click Apply then select OK
- Reboot
- Retry the Windows Update

Reset Windows Update Components
- Press the Power Button and hold it until your PC turns off
- Press the Power Button again to start your PC
- Once you are logged in the Windows successfully, press Windows key once
- Type cmd in the Start Search
- Right click the command prompt from the search results and select Run as Administrator
- Type net stop wuauserv and press Enter
- Type net stop cryptSvc and press Enter
- Type net stop bits and press Enter
- Type net stop msiserver and press Enter
- Type ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old and press Enter
- Type ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old and press Enter
- Type net start wuauserv and press Enter
- Type net start cryptSvc and press Enter
- Type net start bits and press Enter
- Type net start msiserver and press Enter
- Close the Command Prompt and reboot.
- Retry the Windows update.
