End the file explorer task
There are instances when the problem can be caused by a glitch in the file explorer application which can simply be fixed by ending its task.
- Hold CTRL, SHIFT, and Esc (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) keys simultaneously to open the Task Manager
- Look for the File Explorer in the list of process
- Select Windows Explorer and click End Task.
- Restart the computer.

Disable AutoPlay
If you are experiencing the problem while inserting a USB drive to your computer then this could be the AutoPlay feature that is working. To fix this you just have to disable this feature.
- Hold Windows key and press R
- Type control panel and press Enter
- Select small icons from the drop-down menu under View By (top right corner)
- Select AutoPlay
- Uncheck the option Use AutoPlay for all media and devices
- Click Save
