Windows 10 has a pre-installed email application, called Mail, that allows users to easily access their Outlook email as well as email from other providers such as Gmail. Those who use this app regularly are quite pleased with its performance as well as overall design. If however you prefer using a different email application then it’s best to disable or or uninstall the Mail application to free up system resources. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will show you how to disable windows 10 Mail app.
Disable the Mail app
You can disable the Mail app by preventing it from running in the background. This means that the only way that emails are going to be received is if you open the app.
Time needed: 2 minutes.
Turn off Mail background app
- Click on the Start button.
This is located on the lower left side of the screen.
- Click on Settings.
Just click on the icon that looks like a gear.
- Click on Privacy.
This is usually the second to the last option at bottom.
- Click on Background apps.
This is located on the left side of the screen.
- Turn off the switch for Mail and Calendar.
This will prevent the app from receiving info and sending notifications when you are not using it.
If you prefer to have the app running in the background but don’t want to receive notifications from it then you can simply just disable the Mail app notification.
- Open the Mail app. You can do this from the Start menu or from its taskbar shortcut.
- Click on Settings.
- Click on Notifications.
- Select the Apply to all accounts option.
- Turn off the Show notifications in the Action Center setting.
If you don’t use the Mail application then you can choose to uninstall Mail and Calendar app completely from Windows 10.
- Click on the Start button
- Click on Settings
- Click on Apps
- Find Mail and Calendar and highlight the app.
- Click on the uninstall button.
