How To Fix Avast VPN Not Working Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a server overload to an interference from a third party software. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.

Try changing the VPN location

When connecting to the VPN service you will choose a specific VPN location to connect to. For example, if you connect to an Australian VPN location then other services on the internet will think that you are in Australia. Sometimes this problem can be caused by the location you have chosen. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you will need to change the VPN location.

  • Open the VPN application and select the Privacy option from the left side of the screen.
  • On the right, click on the button of Change Location and select another location which wasn’t selected before.
  • Save your changes and exit.
  • Restart your computer.

Check your internet connection

If you don’t have an internet connect to a VPN then this problem will usually occur. In case the problem is caused by connection issues then try to restart your router / modem. You should also consider calling your ISP regarding this matter.

Check your subscription

Since the Avast SecureLine VPN is a paid service you will need to make sure that your account is active. A subscription will usually  get canceled when the user is unable to charge the entered account. Check your account and payment details and make sure that you have subscription enabled.

Do a clean boot

There’s a possibility that a third party software running in the background is causing this problem. To check if this is the case, you should do a clean boot.

  • Press Windows + R to launch the Run application.
  • Type “msconfig” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • Go to the Services tab present at the top of the screen. Check the line which says “Hide all Microsoft services”. Once you click this, all Microsoft related services will be disabled leaving behind all the third-party services.
  • Click the “Disable all” button present at the near bottom at the left side of the window. All the third-party services will now be disabled.
  • Click Apply to save changes and exit.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click the option of “Open Task Manager”.
  • Select each service one by one and click “Disable” at the bottom right side of the window.
  • Restart your computer and launch Avast VPN again and try connecting. If it works properly, it means that some service or application was causing the issue. You can launch the task manager again and try enabling each application one by one and checking the behavior. Try pinpointing the application which was causing the issue.

Reinstall Avast SecureLine VPN

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should reinstall the Avast VPN.

  • Press Windows + R, type “appwiz.cpl” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  • Once in the application manager, search for the Avast SecureLine VPN entry, right-click on it and select Uninstall.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Go to the official Avast download page and download a fresh installation copy to an accessible location and install it.
  • Launch the software and enter your credentials.
  • Run the VPN.
