How To Fix Windows 10 DCOM Error 1084 Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from corrupted system files due to a software upgrade or a corrupted driver. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps that you need to do to fix this problem.

Reinstall the graphics driver

If the screen flickers while the issue occurs then there’s a chance that the problem is caused by a corrupted graphics driver. To fix this you just have to reinstall the driver.

  • Go to Start Menu and type in ‘Device Manager’.
  • Open Device Manager.
  • There, locate ‘Display Adapters’ and click to expand it.
  • Right click on your graphics card driver and select ‘Uninstall device’.
  • Follow the prompted instructions and your driver will be uninstalled.
  • Reboot your system.

Check if the windows 10 DCOM Error 1084 issue still occurs.

Run a system file checker scan

The System File Checker tool works by repairing missing or corrupted system files.

  • Type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  • Type the following command, and then press Enter.  It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
  • Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.
  • If there are corrupted files then you should repair these manually, view details of the System File Checker process to find the corrupted file, and then manually replace the corrupted file with a known good copy of the file.

To to view details of the System File Checker process

  • Open an elevated command prompt as described in the previous step 1.
  • At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: findstr /c:”[SR]” %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >”%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt” 
  • Open the Sfcdetails.txt file from your desktop.

To manually replace a corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file

  • Type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  • Copy and then paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER: takeown /f Path_And_File_Name where The Path_And_File_Name placeholder represents the path and the file name of the corrupted file. For example, type takeown /f C:\windows\system32\jscript.dll. 
  • Copy and paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER: icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F where the Path_And_File_Name placeholder represents the path and the file name of the corrupted file. For example, type icacls C:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /grant administrators:F.
  • Replace the corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file. To do this, copy and paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER: Copy Source_File Destination where the Source_File placeholder represents the path and file name of the known good copy of the file on your computer, and the Destination placeholder represents the path and file name of the corrupted file.

Run DISM

If the SFC tool can’t fix the problem then you should try using DISM or Deployment Image Servicing and Management. This is a tool used to fix component store corruption that prevents SFC from running properly.

  • Open Start.
  • Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  • Type the following command to perform a quick health check and press Enter: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If there are issues found then proceed with the following steps.

  • Open Start.
  • Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  • Type the following command and press Enter: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • The DISM tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.

Check if the Windows 10 DCOM Error 1084 issue still occurs.

Run the computer in Safe Mode

There are instances when a third party software installed on your computer can cause this problem. To verify this you will need to run the computer in Safe Mode.

  • Press Windows key + I on your keyboard to open Settings. 
  • Select Update & Security  > Recovery
  • Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  • After your PC restarts to Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. You may be asked to enter your BitLocker recovery key.
  • After your PC restarts, you’ll see a list of options. Select 4 or press F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you’ll need to use the Internet, select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then you will need to find out what software is causing the problem and uninstall it.

Restore your computer

One way to fix this problem is to restore your computer to a previous point when the issue did not occur. Take note that this will only work if you have enabled the System restore option on your computer previously.

  • Open Start.
  • Search for Create a restore point, and click the top result to open the System Properties experience.
  • Click the System Restore button.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Select the restore point that you want to use on your computer.
  • Click the Scan for affected programs button to understand the apps that will no longer be available because they’re added after the creation of the restore point.
  • Click the Close button.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Click the Finish button.
