How to use Windows 10 offline Maps app to get directions [tutorial]

With Windows 10, getting to your destination is made easy with the use of Microsoft’s own Maps app. Though we find it highly unlikely that you’ll use your laptop that runs Windows 10 over your mobile in finding directions, it still pays to know how to in case an emergency arise. You’ll most likely be using Windows 10 Maps app in your Surface device but regardless of the device you have, the steps on how to configure and use it should be the same.

One good thing with Windows 10 Maps app is its ability to continue giving you turn-by-turn directions even when you’re offline. Having offline functionality is an especially useful feature, especially when you’re travelling. Just be sure to download offline maps in advance before going out.

While in offline mode, Windows 10 Maps app can provide reliable street-by-street directions to places you want to go. In order to download offline maps, follow these steps:

  1. Open Start Menu by clicking the Start button.
  2. Click on Settings.
  3. Click System.
  4. Select Offline maps.
  5. Click the + button next to Download maps.
  6. Select the continent where your preferred country is located.
  7. Pick the region to download. Downloadable areas can vary. Some continents may have entire countries covered while others may only have a portion of a country availble for download.
  8. Repeat the same process above if you want to download more regions. The app allows multiple simultaneous downloads of regions. You can click the multiple-option button on the bottom bar. Then, select the regions you desired and begin downloading the maps.

Some feature of the WIndows 10 Maps app will not work offline. For example, you won’t be able to use 3D view in offline mode.

Downloaded offline maps can take a lot of hard drive space. If you no longer needs your downloaded offline maps, be sure to delete them from Offline maps settings.

How to get directions using Offline Maps

  1. Open Start Menu by clicking the Start button.
  2. Select Maps.
  3. Click Directions.
  4. You can use the filter to remove things like tolls, or traffic while driving by changing the transportation mode.
  5. In the A (Starting point) and B (Destination) boxes, start typing an address, city, business name, or the name of a contact. Select from the results that appear as you type.
  6. If you want to add stops along the way, you can select Add destination +. Alternatively, you can right click (or press and hold) on the map and select Add destination option. To rearrange the stops in the list, you can drag the destinations up and down.
  7. Select Get directions.
  8. To hear step-by-step directions as you travel, select G . Or, to print them out, select More  > Print .
